A career horticulturist in the broadest sense and with many years wide-ranging experience, Colin brings a unique depth of knowledge and creativity to the Academy.
The son of a Cornish grower, he was brought up to understand the business of horticulture intimately and was trained alongside his parents and other growers and at three leading colleges.
Colin has since managed a number of horticultural businesses, often with a large technical element to them and has enjoyed the challenges presented by working within different sectors of the industry. He has been employed by companies large and small, in this country and abroad.
In his later career Colin and Chantal Elliott have run their own landscaping company, specialising in domestic gardens in London and Hertfordshire. They have won prestigious RHS awards for their show gardens at Chelsea, Hampton Court and Gardenersí World Live. While their gardens for the likes of Ford Motors received greater critical acclaim, they were particularly pleased with their garden at Chelsea 2000 which they designed, built and sponsored themselves. This garden was in a modern, cubist style and featured South African gemstone gravel: the first use of the material in the UK.
Colin lives and breathes gardening, spending time when not working taking photographs, lecturing and writing on the subject. He enjoys regular visits to gardens, nurseries and gardening shows in this country and abroad.
He has provided advice to the subscribers of AOLís UK internet service for over a decade and has written monthly articles for a number of magazines for even longer. His garden ďblogĒ was listed amongst AOLís top 10 sites and Colin derives great satisfaction from communicating his love of plants and gardening to the public and students. He currently writes two blogs and contributes to a large number of web sites. As a member of the Garden Media Guild in the UK, his writing can often be seen in gardening and lifestyle magazines.
At the Garden Design Academy, Colin now works with experts in horticulture and other disciplines to provide a wide range of distance learning and residential courses.
